Haptic Touch technology (more info on that here) is something we’ve not quite experienced on a large scale. It essentially allows for screens to emit vibrations/textures you can feel. Bumps, ridges, smooth surfaces, that kind of thing which allows for more sensory input for your fingers to touch while playing with the Wii U controller. This could mean you can feel where certain buttons may be on the screen allowing for easier understanding of where your hands are without having to look down quite as often. Who knows where this could lead if true.

The rumor comes from the fact that the company ViviTouch is going to be at E3 as a WiiU related booth according to many outlets.

Utilizing a revolutionary new component, ViviTouch™ is the first product to intensify the experience of mobile gaming by evolving it: No longer just a pretty picture frame, a ViviTouch™-enabled device allows you to feel explosions, aerial battles and uppercuts like you were meant to.

Want more info on ViviTouch? check out their website here and gobble up that info.

According to the video interview below, Brian Martel, Chief Creative Officer at Gearbox Software and director of Aliens: Colonial Marines claims that the WiiU has “more RAM than some of the other things [platforms]” and a “really great processor” that addup to the WiiU being no slouch in the performance department. When it comes to gaming, the experience as a whole is all that matters and from everything I’ve seen and read, I have no doubts the performance overall will be great and who can resist Mario or Zelda at 1080p? Or, Alience: Colonial Marines even. Here’s the video.

(yes, I died 88 times)

Hey welcome to the blog. I’m a big fan of everything Nintendo (yes, even the Virtual Boy!) and have been since getting my first NES in 1985 at the ripe age of 11. Yes, I’m an older gent, but I know what’s fun. And Super Mario 3D Land on the Nintendo 3DS is a ton of fun. How’s that for a segue?

I bought our 3DS about a month or so ago after waiting to see how it would pan out after it’s initial launch. We own the first generation Nintendo DS, the grey clamshell bulletproof version which our boys (3 and 5) play with and I was interested in where Nintendo has taken handhelds since. I had looked into the 3DS quite a bit, watched it’s reveal, read reviews and watched GiantBomb.com QuickLooks on various titles, read first hand impressions about the software and the system itself and was excited to pick it up knowing a bit about what it could do. There were some surprises; I didn’t know it could play Netflix for example which is neat although I may never use it. My initial reactions to the Nintendo 3DS were very positive due to the overall quality of the system hardware wise and the neat little OS Nintendo has built to handle the software. It’s come so far since the first generation DS and a good step up from the DSi in terms of features and usability. I even find the charging base to be a cool “feature” now that we also own a DSi that has to be plugged instead of just cradled. On to Super Mario.

When I picked up the DS, I was torn between Super Mario 3D Land and the Zelda remake, which is one of my all time favorite games. I chose Mario over Zelda knowing I would come back for Zelda and I wanted a really fresh experience for the system. Super Mario 3D Land is a great game and it makes good use of the capabilities of the 3DS. The first time I looked through the in-game binoculars and moved the 3DS look around as if I was really using them I got a good laugh. The game really captures what made the older Super Mario games great and took it into a 3D world. Not like Super Mario Galaxy exactly, more as if Super Mario World (SNES) and Galaxy had a baby and it was made in 3D. The smaller levels make for great short gaming sessions. You can open up the 3DS, finish a level or two and move on feeling satisfied having gotten a Mario fix in about 5-10 minutes. That’s not to say there isn’t alot of content to the game as there are many levels to play with some new tricks and even suits up Mario’s sleeves.

I’ve been playing Super Mario 3D Land off and on for the past month and I finished off the final boss tonight. I don’t want to give away who the final boss is and spoil anything, but it’s Bowser again. And it’s fun. Again. The last few levels were more challenging than the previous in classic Mario fashion and I’ll just say if you know how most Mario’s end, you’ll know just about what to expect. The final levels are a wild ride, literally in some aspects, and I lost the majority of men during those levels but it was well worth it. Challenging in places that pays off in rewards when you complete levels or bosses or sometimes just certain areas.

If you fail an area too many times, you get the option of busting a special box that will give you a sparkling Tanooki tail which essentially makes you invincible and float for just about forever if you need. I used it once and only because I had made it to the end of the level, went to jump on the flag annnnnd fell off the side of the level instead. And that was after trying the previous portion about 15 times (it was a later level). So I used the sparkly suit and floated my butt on over to the flag and capped it that time.

Once you finish the game, you open up some neat things I won’t spoil and I haven’t seen much but it looks like there’s MUCH more content going on here. Anyhow. Thanks for reading the blog, I’ll be updating with my thoughts on everything from the NES to the Wii and the 3DS. I’ve just replaced the 72pin adapter in our NES and it’s working like a charm now. Bayou Billy here I come.
